4 Ways of Transferring Files From Android to Mac

You can use the cloud, Bluetooth, or specific apps

This article explains common ways to transfer files from your Android device to your Mac. You can use the methods for files, images, or documents you’ve saved on Android that you want to use on your Mac. The article applies to Android 12 and macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later.

Use the Android File Transfer App

One of the most popular ways to transfer files from Android to Mac is using Android File Transfer. You download and install the app on macOS and can then access the files and folders on your Android device.

  1. Visit the Android File Transfer website on your Mac. Choose Download Now, and grant permission if prompted. You can check out the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy by selecting those links.

  2. Once you receive the file, open Downloads in your web browser or the Mac Downloads folder and double-click the AndroidFileTransfer.dmg file.

  4. Connect your Android device to your Mac using a USB or USB-C cable, and grant permission if prompted on either device.

  5. Open Android File Transfer from your Mac’s Applications folder. You can then see the files and folders from your Android device.

  6. To save a file or folder to your Mac, drag it from the Android File Transfer window to the desired location on your Mac.

Upload to Google Drive, Dropbox, or Other Cloud Services

Another simple way to transfer files from Android to Mac is using a cloud storage service such as Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or similar. This allows you to upload the file from your Android device and then access it on your Mac using a web browser or the installed Mac app.

Here’s how to transfer files from Android to Mac using Google Drive.

  1. Open the Google Drive app on your Android device and tap the plus sign on the lower right.

  2. Choose Upload and then locate and choose the file. You can also use the filters at the top to find specific file types.

  3. Tap the file you want to upload, and you’ll see it immediately displayed in Google Drive.

  4. Visit Google Drive on the web on your Mac and sign in with the same Google account as on Android.

  5. In the menu on the left, you can choose Recent to quickly see the latest uploaded files or use My Drive to locate the file if you prefer.

    You can then open or download the file as you usually would.

Share Via Bluetooth

Using advances in wireless technology, you can transfer files from Android to Mac using Bluetooth. Make sure you have Bluetooth enabled on both devices, then connect and move the files.

First, Connect Via Bluetooth

You first need to pair your Android device with your Mac. Here’s what to do.

  1. Open the Bluetooth settings on your Android device by selecting Bluetooth at the top or Settings > Connected devices.

  2. Select Pair new device.

  3. When you see the available nearby devices, tap your Mac.

  4. You should see a Connection Request pop-up window on your Mac with a code. Confirm that the code matches what is displayed immediately on Android and select Connect.

Now Transfer Files Via Bluetooth

Once you successfully connect the devices, you can transfer files easily with Bluetooth.

  1. Locate the file on Android. For instance, you may have a document saved in the Files app or a picture in Google Photos.

  2. Open the Share menu using the app containing your file and choose Bluetooth.

  3. Pick your Mac in the list.

  4. You should then see your file in the Mac Downloads folder.

Use the Pushbullet App and Browser Extension

If you use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your primary web browser on Mac, you can use Pushbullet. Install the app on your Android device and the extension for your browser and then send files between your devices.

  1. Install Pushbullet on your devices.

    • On Android, open Google Play, and search for “Pushbullet,” and select Install. You can then sign up for free using your Google account.
    • On Mac, open Chrome or Firefox, head to the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons page, search for “Pushbullet,” and install the extension. Then, sign in with the same credentials as on your Android device.

    You can head directly to Pushbullet on Chrome or Pushbullet on Firefox to download the extension.

  2. Once you’re ready to transfer a file from Android to Mac, open Pushbullet on your phone and go to the Pushing tab.

  3. Tap the attachment icon (paper clip) to the left of the message field and choose Take PhotoSend Photo, or Send File. For this example, we’ll choose Send File.

  4. Locate and select the file on the following screen.

  5. In the drop-down menu above the message field, choose the device you’re sending the item to.

  6. Tap the Send button (arrow).

  7. On your Mac, open Chrome or Firefox, and the file should automatically appear in a browser tab.

    Alternatively, you can open the Pushbullet extension, select People, and choose yourself. You’ll see your file in a conversation window where you can pick it to open it or right-click to save it to your Mac.

    With Pushbullet, you can transfer files from Android to Mac and links to websites or text reminders in the conversation window.
